Although we’re nearing the end of January, it still feels appropriate to wish you a happy New Year.

I have developed a ritual to start my year—one of looking both backwards and forwards. I find it grounding—a practice that brings me back to where I am in my life. It helps me focus on what lies ahead.

I start by evaluating all aspects of my life. I rate how I’m doing, including my personal well-being, creativity, relationships, community, and adventures, as well as how I’m progressing in my career, business, and finances. This process highlights which areas need attention in the form of money, time, energy, and focus.

This map is then compared to the areas that will naturally demand attention. For example, I think about the people in my life—my kids, parents, siblings, and friends—who may need special care this year. Last year was my son’s final year of school, so I prepared to prioritise the many demands of that milestone.

This year, however, I will be an empty nester. I’ll have more freedom to pursue my own dreams without juggling the day-to-day responsibilities of children and career. It is a new season in many ways.

I am eager to take Foundation Family Wealth to the next level—to ensure the business thrives long after my retirement or involvement. I am not intending to retire any time soon! I believe I have many more years of fulfilling work ahead of me, although the shape of that work may change. However, just as we encourage our clients to plan for the unexpected, I must acknowledge that time is precious and that I am not in control of how much time is afforded to me.

I am also eager to pursue hobbies, like tackling my neglected but promising garden and exploring more of the beautiful Cape with friends.

You will notice that I approach planning holistically. I realised a long time ago that I could not think about my life in compartments—resources are finite. If you starve an area of your life of attention, it will eventually demand it, often through chaos—much like a toddler throwing a temper tantrum.

Not all areas of life deserve the same attention at all times, though. We must acknowledge the seasons: times to nurture our well-being, times to push for career advancement, times to prioritise relationships, and times to focus on ourselves. There are times for saving and for spending, for investment and withdrawal.

It helps me to consider this flow of attention in advance so that I don’t feel the constant tug-of-war between different areas of my life.

I have also learned to hold planning lightly. Life happens, and we must adjust. When we’ve already considered where our attention should flow, it is easier to redirect that flow when faced with the unexpected.

May there be a satisfying flow of attention in your life this year—at times bursting with energy like a roaring river, and at other times quietly flowing toward your desired life. May you be blessed with the clarity to know what to pursue and what to leave behind.

Ps. Join me for a creative morning workshop where we'll explore the beautiful possibilities that 2025 holds and craft your very own vision board to guide you through the year! I am offering a workshop in Cape Town on 31st January and Johannesburg on 5th February. E-mail me for an invite. Seats are limited.

Kind regards,
