One of my clients recently reminded me of the value of my annual life review. She said she has adopted this ritual and now sets time aside each January to reflect on her life and goals.
As the end of the year draws near, I’ve started doing the same. I’m thinking about what worked, what didn’t, and what I want more of next year.
In January, I’ll sit down with a cup of coffee and a pastry and perform my annual life review. It includes an overview of every aspect of my life, including health, money, career, spirituality, relationships, family, community, and fun.
In each area, I identify one or two goals to help me grow and thrive, and every year I choose one area to prioritise.
This year, my focus was on health. My goal was to feel fit and strong by year-end. Although I’ve been doing strength training for years, I often prioritised other things above it. This year, those sessions were sacred in my diary, and I can feel the difference.
Not everything went according to plan. Earlier this year, I wrote about the impact of my life choices on my health. But I got back on track and can tick off that goal for the year. I now enjoy my hikes up Table Mountain even more, with the improved balance and strength I’ve gained.
You may think that ticking off a goal is trivial, but there’s science behind the satisfaction. The release of dopamine, which is the brain’s “feel-good” chemical, provides a real sense of pleasure and accomplishment.
It’s easy to forget our intentions when we don’t review or prioritise them. My life list brings me back to what matters. Each month, I note small steps toward my yearly intention. This year taught me how easily energy spent elsewhere can derail my desire for a good life.
Life will always throw surprises our way. Having clear intentions helps me decide whether to follow a new direction or stay firm. It’s a balance between flexibility and priorities.
I share my life list because it may help you as you review your own life. It may not be for everyone, but for me it’s essential. It’s a guide for my energy and attention, and a ritual I look forward to every January.
